Problems with Catholic Grade School not being very Catholic

My boys go to a pretty good school, but I don't know if it is a good Catholic school.  Although most of the teachers are Catholic some are not very active.  I don't want to be criticizing the school all the time because the teachers are great for the most part.  But I also don't want to sit back and watch them do things that avoid the Catholic faith.  They don't go against it, they just avoid opportunities to teach it.  The most recent issue is our students are going to be involved in a Sunday Mass and record songs for a CD.  The music teacher chose "We are the World" as the song to sing during Mass and record it.  I think they should sing liturgical songs for Mass.  Am I wrong to get upset about this?  What could I do about it?

Have you gone to your Pastor? If that doesn't help go to your Bishop or Archbishop. We are the World is a great song but there are so many other songs that are more appropriate to Mass. I have 4 boys that have been in a boys choir and have sung several songs in Latin. I am not suggesting that the children need to sing in Latin, there are many other great songs that they could sing in English that are still more appropriate to Mass.

I am very lucky to live in Lincoln, NE with one of the most if not the most conservative Bishop in the country, maybe the world. He has been critisized by many, some Catholic, mostly not Catholic, but most of the Catholics I know feel blessed to have him and to be able to practice our Catholic faith with many of the beautiful traditions of Catholicism.

I don't know what I would do if we ever had to move. Our Principal and teachers are also wonderful and my sons have been raised knowing more about their faith than I think my husband learned we he was attending the same school. I think going to grade school shortly after Vatican 2 had something to do with that. I am an adult convert, I converted when I was single about a year before I met my husband so I know about Vactican 2 but am not always sure of all of the implications.

Good luck, be persistant and I will pray for you. Feel free to keep in touch!
That song doesn't seem appropriate at all for Mass. It doesn't mention God... There's a reason that even for weddings, there are special songs that you have to choose from; you can't just choose the latest love song from the radio... I'm surprised this is allowed by the priest.
I spoke to our Priest today. He felt the song was Ok since it has a good theme about coming together as a community and had very significant meaning when it first came out. He also said there is secular music at Mass all the time. The words and meaning are what really matters. So, I guess I'll let my boys be involved if they want to. I really didn't want to make a "fuss" about this now anyway. Our music teachers wasn't much of a Church goer, but I have seen her at Mass the past couple weekends! I'll continue to pray for her and maybe offer some CD's of Catholic music for her to use.
Yeah, you were right to drop it-- you can't argue with the priest. LOL
Since I am not "texting" savvy, before I respond further to your comment I need to clarify - LOL means Laughing Out Loud? You are being sarcastic?
"He also said there is secular music at Mass all the time."
With all due respect for your priest, I must say this sounds like a pretty lame excuse for allowing such a song to be used. Secular music has no place in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the first place. Be sure to add some prayers for your priest, it sounds as if the secular status quo may have crept into his mindset. God bless you all & keep living & teaching the Faith at home in your domestic church!
Sue -
I posted about this very topic last year but with regards to college. I was shocked at how NOT Catholic the "Catholic College" my daugter and I visited was. So disappointed, we ended up deciding aganist it. I understand times are hard and they feel they have to cater to the secular to fill the seats but the "Catholic" part of their identity and the private school price-tag that goes along with it should be modified then. Unless you were a theology major it was made clear to me that it was like going to any other small college. Sad. Really.

I give you credit for addressing the issue at your school/parish and I would kindly disagree with your Priest that secular music is played during mass "all the time." Other than "America the Beautiful" (which still refers to God) I can't think of the last time I heard a secular song during mass. Best to you, Sue.
I learned a good lesson today, the Lord will take care of everything! Our school children sang "We Are the World" today, BEFORE Mass. Then Father referred to the song in his homily for Divine Mercy Sunday, explaining how we need to realize we are all part of the community of the World, and we must show Mercy to everyone. He is a great speaker and really brought it home for me. It all turned out fine and singing even brought some "occassional" church attendees to Mass, so that made it even better! Thanks to everyone for your insight on this subject.
There are numerous haters who, since the 1970s, have infiltrated the Roman Catholic school system. They will never admit it. They will never give up, but if you could read their thoughts, you would be both terrified and horrified of who they really are- the demonic souls of dead American Protestants who found out that they weren't going to the Roman Catholic Kingdom of Heaven, they were going to Purgatory. The blatantly Pagan/Communist policies they utilized throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s to destroy the Church did not pay off as the Soviet Union collapsed literally overnight. Too bad, 'sisters' but Uncle Joey won't be there for you anymore and you are no longer the 'Gorgeous Goergian' ghost you thought you were. Meanwhile, English-speaking Catholicism is a wasteland of confusion and metropolitan sewage.

Their obvious hate-filled agenda has been thankfully thwarted by a few very brave Orthodox Jews and Eastern Orthodox Christians who gave a d-mn about the Catholic people. Even so, echoes of the Cold War still haunt the halls of many Catholic grade schools while they (Protestant heretics) grow older in bodies and minds that are not theirs to keep. As the years go by, their hate gets weaker and weaker, as the Church patiently waits for them to die (once again), so that they may be healed, purified, and prepared for their inevitable Angelic escort off Roman Catholic Church property and eventual reunion with their own families.
I have seen a catholic school field trip in which parents were drinking.  It bothered me a lot.  Even though it was out of the kids sight, it just creeped me out.
