Yikes! My 40 bags in 40 days has been hijacked! I was off to a great start when 2 weeks ago my main floor wash machine broke down and flooded a good portion of the house. The end result is a dry house (whew) that is still in limbo. We're still unable to hook up a new laundry set, and don't have decent access to 25% of the house. The guest bedroom is neatly stacked with MANY identical, taped up boxes all marked "unaffected contents", courtesy of the restoration company that worked hard to dry out the house properly. Now that the immediate crisis is over, I'd really like to get back on track with the 40 bags because I think it'd keep me focused and help keep the household running smoothly, but this week I am starting to spin my wheels. So...my question is.... what's best, to focus the 40 bags on the livable parts of the house to keep that end in check, or to tackle the '40' mysterious boxes?  What would you do in my shoes?

Thanks Joan and Jennie. When there was water everywhere, I sprung into action and started tackling it one step at a time, quickly, with the most urgent thing first. There was so much to be done, and we were crazy busy, but we kept all the balls in the air and managed well, all things considered. Fast forward to this week: we are waiting the estimates etc for repairs, we are in limbo. Now that the emergency part is done, the pace of progress has really slowed down and everywhere I look the house just seems so upside down with so many things out of place. I think our whole family has found it hard to adjust to this phase. Thanks for your replies - it's really good to hear an objective opinion. I think you are both right in that climbing this mountain will take more time, but just needs to be done one step at a time. I think I will just focus on keeping the family routines going, manage the logistics of the repairs etc, and if there's time sneak in some time to tackle one pile or box at a time. What a lesson in patience!
I agree with Joan. It seems like you have enough on your plate without trying to get to these forty bags, too. :-) As you can move back into the flooded areas of your house and start unpacking those boxes again, just get rid of the things you don't want. It may not get done "on time", but it'll get done!
