Fatima with the kids?

Has anyone ever taken a family trip to Fatima? We have six months left in the UK and would love to go to Fatima before we leave, but with three kids finding a hotel can be difficult. Most will not accommodate us all in one room (unless we lie about ages or number of children). I have done google searches for apartments/guesthouses, but nothing has turned up. So I am turning to the online Catholic community....any suggestions?

Cursive Vs Printing

I am rethinking my handwriting curriculum for next year and wondered if anyone knows of a handwriting program that uses a scaled down cursive--not every letter connects. It is almost a mix of cursive and printing...which I think most of us do naturally anyway. I read an article a while back, probably linked from one of the many homeschool blogs I visit, that talked about this sort of handwriting. I think it was a professor, but she was writing about improving her own handwriting as well as her…See More

Government run health care?

Lets talk government run health care. What does it mean? Here is what it means in the UK.

It means you have no power. It means you can’t make choices. Want a basic test (papsmear, urinalysis, etc) now, just for peace mind, because in your gut you think something is wrong?....nope, "it hasn’t been 3 years yet" or "the situation doesn’t warrant it" (at least that check list in the nurses hand says so). Just try offering to pay for it...that won’t fly either. Want to call and make an… Continue

Natural Consequence Generator

He forgot to clear his breakfast dishes. I refuse to nag. I refuse to remind. The dishes still sit there on the table....waiting. Waiting for me to come up with the right "Natural Consequence".

That term, "Natural Consequences", makes you feel as if you should be able to easily see what is the best consequence for any behavior....after all, it's "NATURAL", right?

Don't you wish there was a "Natural Consequence Generator"? One of those little aps you put on your desktop and all… Continue

Reading what I used to write

I used to write. Back in the days before marriage and kids, when I had time, when it was my job, when the Teacher/Catechist Me had lots of wisdom to share with parents. Recently I decided to read what I wrote back then. And I found that at least some of it has some wisdom for the Mama/Wife/Primary Catechist Me. Here is one that I read recently (wrote not so recently) and took some encouragement from. Maybe you will too.

The homeschooling group in Beijing is all expats. In Shenzhen I met one homeschooling family that was Chinese (and I think they used Sonlight!), and a few other expat, but they weren't as plentiful or organized as BJ. Interestingly, the ones we met were all through Myles' work as a child fashion model. In BJ they meet once a week for educational and recreational activities. We have been in contact with them but haven't joined them for anything yet, mostly because we live really far out of the mainstream expat neighborhoods.

Mass is not as difficult to attend as you would expect. In many of the largest cities, weekly (or in the case of SZ, twice-a-month) Masses in English are available. Usually, though, these Masses are open only to foreigners and local Chinese are prohibited from joining. Masses in Chinese are usually open to all worshippers, and many parishes even have daily and Holy Day of Obligation Masses. Even in officially registered churches, all sacraments are valid (ref Pope's letter, Diocese of HK information, etc).

Depending on where you get assigned, China can be an excellent expat assignement. I have many, many friends in Shenzhen, a common expat assignment for oil companies. Many of them live very comfortable lives with fairly large furnished houses or apartments, inexpensive domestic help (sometimes multiple housekeepers and nannies) and drivers. If your employer is paying for tuition, the international schools in most of the cities are quite good. I'm trying to get involved with the Beijing homeschoolers because we can't afford tuition this year. If you get a good expat package, China is a great expat assignment. We straddle the expat and chinese living, so we have mixed feelings about living in china.
